Ice skating is certainly an amusing activity, loved both by children and the grown-ups, both by experts and beginners, also because it has the capacity to immerse people in the Christmas atmosphere, reminding us of cold, snow, winter in a word, of Christmas! To have fun you usually do not need too many things, what you need are an ice rink and skates, but if the ice rink is to be found in a particularly fascinating location, people certainly have more fun, and the atmosphere of the feast reaches everybody in a more powerful way. This is the case of the Somerset House Ice Rink, in London, which has been hosting for 9 years one of the most appreciated and well-known ice events of the capital city. Every year, between November and January, in the courtyard (which was reopened to visitors in 2000) of the Somerset House, a magnificent neoclassical building situated near the Thames and the Waterloo Bridge, a famous ice rink opens, and in this way the celebrations of Christmas time really start. Buying a ticket everyone have the possibility to enter the rink and skate in a cheerful atmosphere, characterised by Christmas music, lights and decorations. In particular, this year a huge Christmas tree, more that 40 feet high, will tower over the courtyard, and it will be decorated by Tiffany’s, the famous jewels producer, which will make the ice rink a glamorous space, and will make the event even more special. You will have the opportunity to skate in an incomparable location, among historical monuments and breath-taking decorations, and everybody, from children to the grown-ups, from beginners to experts, will have the opportunity to enjoy the ice rink: organisers, indeed, have tried to satisfy everybody, and they have scheduled a great number of different activities. Throughout January children will have the possibility to take part in the Saturday morning lessons, but every person who is not sure to be good enough at skating, or who is a bit rusty and would like to refresh the technique in order to be sure not to fall down too many times, can book a guide, both individually and as part of a group. Furthermore, people who skate well and would like to improve their ability, can participate in the lessons that will take place at the end of October, before the opening of the ice rink. Organisers have thought about students, too, who will have the possibility to buy a reduced ticket showing their students ID, and also about the lovers of night-life, who will have the opportunity to skate from 10:30 p.m. to midnight, in a particularly fascinating atmosphere characterised also by the music played by famous deejays. Another event, which is particularly interesting above all for gluttons, is the Breakfast at Tiffany’s: on Saturday morning, throughout December, skaters will have the possibility to enjoy cakes, to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate, and to toast with a glass of champagne. But everyday you will have the opportunity to eat something and warm up entering the Somerset House Skate Café and Bar, furnished with hot drinks, cakes, soups and, as usual during Christmas time, mulled wine. Wear skates and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere! London is one of those cities where the Christmas atmosphere is particularly felt, probably because of the decorated shop windows and the lighting of lights in Regent Street, an important event in the city. Also ice rinks play an important role in this period, and the most famous one is probably the Somerset House ice rink (we suggest that you book your tickets in advance). Also in the case that you need to find accommodation in this period you’d better book a cheap hotel in London in advance: the city is particularly expensive and overcrowded with tourists. Tickets: various prices Date: 19th November 2008 - 25th January 2009 Location: Somerset House, London, UK
