Peridot -A Gemstone

By: Mansi

The Egyptian gave peridot the moniker “gem of the sun” for its light properties and appearance, believing that it protected its wearer from “terrors of the night “. The owners and wearers of this gem often view peridot to be a source of good luck and prosperity. The stone also has healing powers and is used for curing diseases like asthma. Peridot usually is transparent and comes in a beautiful array of colors, from brownish or yellowish green to greenish yellow.

The name peridot is said to be derived from two words firstly the French word peritot which means unclear or vague and the Arabic word “faridat”, meaning gem. The other common name of peridot is “poor man’s emerald”. Amongst the commercially produced perodot, the largest by far is the 310 carat and it is known as Kashmiri perodot. The peridot of Pakistan origin can be found in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C

The mining of the gem peridot is not very easy, as it is found in nature. Some of the largest producers of peridot in the world are the states of Hawaii, Nevada, North Carolina and New Mexico in US. Other countries like Sri Lanka, China, Mexico, Kenya, Norway, Myanmar, Tanzania, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Brazil are viable sources of peridot.

Valuable Gemstone-

The gemstone peridot, is also known as the August’s birthstone. Since 2nd century B.C.E the ancient Egyptians and Greeks made use of this gemstone for making jewelry. The Queen of Egypt, ‘Cleopatra’ was a great lover of the stone. Peridot was also used in ornamentation in medieval churches of Europe and we can see its example in the Cathedral of Cologne. The ancient Romans called this stone Evening Emerald because it appeared in a darker green shade in artificial light.

Peridot makes a perfect gift because it is less expensive and can also be used as a substitute for the more expensive gemstone emerald. It is a recommended jewelry accessory for couples celebrating their sixteenth anniversary. Peridot meshes well with white gold and platinum. The gemstone also looks great when fashioned as beaded jewelry, chunky bracelets and necklaces.

Care of the Gemstone-

Peridot should be kept away from very high temperatures of heat and chemicals such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. Peridot should be cleaned with mild water n soap or treated with wax and oil for cleaning it.
