Liposuction - A popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

By: James Sanderson

Liposuction is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic treatments, up there with breast augmentation and rhinoplasty surgery, (otherwise known as a nose job). It is not a treatment that direct improves a person’s health; it’s a cosmetic procedure in order to enhance the appearance. The procedure will remove any pockets of fatty tissue from areas where other weight loss alternatives such as exercising and dieting has failed. Liposuction should not be viewed as a form of weight loss but as a method of changing your bodies contour and shape. People choose liposuction to help rid themselves of unattractive bulges of fatty tissue and improve their body image.

If you want to undergo liposuction, you have to be within 30% of your ideal weight, a surgeon will not perform the treatment on obese people and is by law obliged to ask you to lose weight before returning again.

To be eligible for liposuction, patients have to have a clean bill of health, both physically and mentally. Exercise and dieting should always be considered as a first option and doctors will push for this rather than perform surgery. If these options would fail then liposuction would be appropriate. Skin tone should be firm and have some elasticity otherwise once the fat is removed there will be excess skin left remaining.

Liposuction as a surgery procedure is considered relatively simple. Small incisions are made in the skin where the excess fat is, and then a narrow tube known as a cannula is inserted into the incisions. The tubes are attached to a vacuum machine and the fat is more or less, sucked out. Clinics will perform the procedure giving you the options of local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. Most people prefer the general anaesthetic.

Generally you are not required to stay overnight at a hospital, the treatment is regularly carried out on an outpatients basis, such as a suitably equipped doctor's office, cosmetic surgery centre or a hospital. If there is a large amount of fat to be removed a hospital stay may be necessary

Liposuction can be used in a number of different areas. Women generally have excess fat removed from under their chin, upper arms, outer thighs, hips, waist and stomach. Whilst men complain of excess fat forming love handles around the waist, enlarged male breasts and under the chin. Liposuction can help improve the body shape for both men and women. Now liposuction on the knees and inner thighs are becoming more common. For this kind of procedure this area is generally carried out on women and they are pleased with the results as it can enhance the shape of their legs and make them look slimmer.

Fatty tissue can be removed from a number of areas. Fat around the eyes, on the cheeks and under the chin are all difficult places to get rid of and liposuction can deal easily with these problem areas. Women generally wish for liposuction in the chest area after a breast reduction and men if they suffer from male breast development. Every woman will as they get older develop loose skin on their upper arms and liposuction is often used to remove the fat, a procedure like this is then often followed up by a tightening procedure to remove the loose. The stomach and buttocks are other popular areas of the body that liposuction can help to remove excess fat and give a more defined look to your contour.

Liposuction is commonly seen as a safe method of removing fatty tissue. All surgery has its risks of course and you should always make sure you have all information of these risks before undergoing any treatment. Some patients could experience a dimpling effect or lumpiness in the skin. Others have reported numbness, discoloration, scarring or sagging skin in the treated area. When considering surgery, always inform yourself on all the risks and if there might be any side effects. When consulting your surgeon, that person should be able to explain any risks that could occur. Liposuction will get rid of fatty tissue for you but you must have a realistic expectation and not go too far trying to perfect it. A good doctor should always fully inform you of any possible risks and side effects.
