With today’s ever growing marketplace and (at the time of writing) sagging US dollar, international business is a profitable venture to enter into. I don’t if my high school was a peculiarity but the vast majority of my graduating senior class chose business as their preliminary major (no doubt to change nine or ten times until their ultimate graduation from college.) The big world of business has always been fiercely competitive and now that some domestic companies have decided to freeze hiring there are a lot of us that are without a job. There is a solution however, it will take time but it will pay off in the long run. In Europe it is very common to meet individuals that are bilingual or multilingual, however in the US, according to the 2000 census; only 10% of Americans are bilingual. We Americans just can’t stand up to our European counterparts when it comes to linguistics but this discrepancy ensures a large, ever present demand for Americans that can speak two or more languages. When I lived in Virginia I had a friend who worked at the Russian consulate’s office as a part time translator and made $100 an hour. She ended up paying her way through college because she was smart with how she invested her money but that’s another article for another day. It is an accepted fact that China’s economy is growing at breakneck speed and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime in the near future. There is a dire need for individuals that are fluent (or at least know enough to function) to represent American companies. Also don’t forget Europe! Since the euro is strong against the American dollar there are a growing number of American companies that are exporting to Europe. If you happen to speak German, French, Spanish, or any other language chances are that you could have a job waiting for you that you’re not aware of. Plus with international business there are many perks: traveling the world, meeting interesting people, and experiencing different cultures. And money did I mention money? Also depending on your job you might be able go live in Europe, I’m planning on northern Italy myself but there are plenty of jobs out there that will allow you to live in some of the cultural Meccas of the world. I hope that you found this article interesting and helpful. If you are looking for a program to learn a new language I’ve included some links that may be of assistance. I used “Tell Me More” to learn Spanish and Italian so I can vouch for its effectiveness. Spanish
