Choosing the Perfect Baby Name: Tips for Success

By: Gen Wright

Looking through the long list of potential names can be both exciting and yet confusing. How do you choose which name is right for the little one you have yet to meet? How will you and your partner ever agree on the same name? And finally, once you have selected a name, what happens if it is totally wrong for the child when she arrives?

Fortunately, there are factors to take into account that should significantly ease the process . Picking a name for your baby should be one of the most exciting aspects of having a baby, and the following tips assist you in the process.

#1 - Meaning

Consider the origin of the baby name and what it might mean to you or your family. Does this child represent something to you or is she a miracle? Find out the meanings of the names you have shortlisted to find the name that signifies what he or she represents. Equally you should be careful of the meanings of names. Making a decision only to find out that you picked "the fool" from all the baby boy's names available can be disappointing.

#2 - Impression

Always take into account the impression of the name on you and others. Is it tricky to pronounce or articulate? Does it roll of the tongue freely or is it complicated to say? If you have a long surname, you probably should refrain from choosing a very long first name. You should reflect upon the way a baby name goes with your surname. Occasionally baby names are beautiful on paper, but awkward in reality.

#3 - Memories

Does a specific person from the past inspire you? When selecting a name, consider what that name makes you recall from the past. Is the baby name similar to the name of your ex-boyfriend? This is likely make things a bit uncomfortable between you and your current boyfriend. Think of the names you wouldn’t even consider, I doubt any woman would be unhappy about not being able to name their daughter after a husband's ex-partner.

#4 - Religion

Often a persons faith determines the name they select. Many religions have specific rules regarding baby names, so if you are practising, its important that you determine what your religious teachings have to say about how to name a baby.

#5 - Honor

Does your selection of names include the name of a relative you would like to honor?

Naming a newly born girl after her grandmother is extremely special to all individuals involved and can help the baby form a close bond with her namesake as she grows. Middle names are given occasionally to honor someone important . Naming the child after a family tradition is based on the same principle. In the interest of the child, if you choose to name him after his dad or her mom, find the baby a nickname to help ease the confusion of having the same name as someone else in the household.
